What is a diamond sharpening stone?
A diamond stone is a metal grinding plate to which small diamonds are attached. These industrial stones have a much harder surface than any other stone used for sharpening, making these tools very durable and staying flat with repeated use.
In this post I will walk you through my quest to find the best sharpening stone. If you are new to sharpening your tools, you can refer to my guide atHow to sharpen and refine woodcarving tools, and that tooPicture instructions for sharpening wood carving toolsIt's available on my blog.
A diamond stone sharpener is just the first step I take to take care of my blades. Whenever I sharpen a tool, I always polish it with a leather strap. By the way, I also wrote about this in my article.Top 6 reviews of leather strapsso feel free to stop by.
Types and grains of diamond stones.
Diamond whetstones are generally divided into three categories based on the roughness of each. So we have Coarse which is used for very dull edges, Fine which is designed for sharpening slightly dull edges and Extra Fine to achieve a razor sharp edge on any blade.
The technology and material used to create diamond stones can also vary. Here we have micronized monocrystalline diamond surfaces which are very abrasive, those with MirrorFlat technology like SHARPAL 156N Diamond Whetstone and other variants.
It's worth noting that some diamond whetstones are made of blocks of steel or aluminum molded around diamond shavings. Others are made with diamond sharpening plates glued to blocks of aluminum and in the third type we find plastic or metal plates studded with diamond chips attached to a support block.
Whichever diamond stone you choose, the advantages over simple sharpening stones are numerous. First, they last a lot longer, get the job done a lot quicker, and are generally worth buying even if they tend to be more expensive.
What you should consider before buying a diamond sharpening stone
When looking for the best diamond sharpening stone, there are a few key aspects of any product that you have come to rely on when evaluating.
The main criteria that I consider important for the products in this article are:
- Git rudeness
- durability
- Quality
- Preis
- overall bravery
As with any other stone, the sharpness of diamond stones mainly depends on the sharpnessGrobkörens from the surface. Considering that you will likely need a range of grits, you have to decide whether to use one diamond sharpener for each purpose and buy different ones. Manufacturers sometimes create a special offer to buy three whetstones in one product, and I'll address that later in this article.
As I mentioned before, diamond stones are generally more durable than other sharpening stones. However, different types of whetstones can last longer than others and this is another important aspect to consider.
When it comes to the quality of diamond whetstones, the best ones are aluminum, shaped around diamonds. However, when we combine this feature with the price and durability of the tool, the overall value of the best sharpening stones may not match the quality itself.
Use and storage of diamond stones
DMT diamond stone or any other sharpening stone is used in the same way. Depending on the product properties, the knife glides over the stone or the stone over the knife with simple and clean movements.
When it comes to the care and storage of diamond stones or slabs, the best advice I can give you is to keep them separate. For example, I put them individually in ziplock bags and then stack them. To clean, I wash them in the sink, dry them with a damp towel, and then let them air dry completely outside. I always clean them before stacking them, which I also recommend you do.
SHARPAL 156N Diamond Whetstone Knife Sharpener with Storage Base - Two-grit coarseness for honing and deep honing

This diamond sharpening stone has two contrasting grit sizes: a heavy, coarse grit for coarse sharpening and a super-fine grit for delicate edge work.
What I like about these diamond whetstones is that the package includes a storage box with non-slip pads that can also be used as a base to hold the stone, as well as a three-year manufacturer's warranty.
The tool is very durable and also quite affordable. The downside is that the package includes hard and fine grit, but nothing in between.
SHARPAL 156N Diamond Whetstone Knife Sharpener with Storage Base
- Great quality tool.
- Two different grain surfaces.
- A durable tool with a 3 year guarantee.

Trend DWS/CP8/FC Classic Pro Double Sided Diamond Sharpening Stone - Convenient and durable coarse diamond stone

If the previous set was that expensive, this trendy diamond stone is even higher up the scale. This brand is very popular and well-known, but it does not always live up to expectations.
This modern diamond sharpening set includes a case, non-slip mat and cleaning block. The main characteristic of this rough stone is its flatness, which should ensure the sharpening of any blade.
However, these products can be damaged by the manufacturer and flatness is not guaranteed.

Ultra Sharp Diamond Whetstone Set - Three different grits, very good quality.

This set now contains the finest diamond whetstones, flat and in all coarse grits. You have flat tiles to shape, sharpen and polish all your blades.
The size of the tiles is 8" x 3", making them easy to use and even easier to change out when handling your knife edges from very dull to razor sharp.
A stone holder is also included, and a very nifty one at that, so overall this product is top notch, hands down.

DMT WM8EF-WB 8 Zoll DuoSharp Plus Steinbank

This is a bench diamond whetstone designed for fine and very fine sharpening, allowing you to achieve a razor sharp blade and polish it further.
The size is designed for smaller blades, making it ideal for woodcarving knives and chisels. Excellent quality and longevity are guaranteed, so you should not be disappointed with this diamond stone.

To sum up
Bench diamond stones are generally very easy to use and this particular set is designed for honing semi-sharp edges. It doesn't work well if you have a blunt tool, so you'll need to have another rough rock on the side. This is also why it can be expensive given the grains it contains.
It didn't take me long to understand what these tools are and how best to use them. If you're looking for the best diamond sharpening stone, you need to know what you need it for to find these grits in a set.
Each diamond sharpening stone review in this article is based on my experience of what the tool is good for and what it lacks. In general, the diamond stone is the best sharpening stone because it lasts for many projects and pays off in the long run.
