1Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.2And early in the morning he returned to the temple, and all the people came to him; and he sat and taught them.3And the scribes and Pharisees brought him a woman taken in adultery; and when they placed her in the middle,4they said to him, Master, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.5Now Moses commanded us in the law to stone such; but what do you say6They said this to tempt him, that they might accuse him. But Jesus bent down, and withto befinger wrote on the ground,as if he hadn't heard her.7When they questioned him further, he got up and said to them:Who among you is without sin, let him first throw a stone. 8And again he bent down and wrote on the ground.9And who heardEs, convicted oftheir ownconscience, went out one by one, starting with the oldest, autoto the end: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman was in the midst.10When Jesus got up and saw no one but the woman, he said to her:Woman, where are these accusers of yours? Nobody judged you? 11She said: Nobody, sir. And Jesus said to him:I am not judging you either: go and sin no more.
The light of the world
12Then Jesus spoke to them again and said:I am the light of the world: whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. 13Then the Pharisees said to him, Thou bearest witness of thyself; His report is not true.14Jesus answered and said to them:Though I keep records of myselfyetmy report is true: for I know where I come from and where I am going; but you cannot say where I come from and where I am going. 15You judge by the flesh; I don't judge anyone. 16And yet, if I judge, my judgment is true: because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me. 17It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true. 18I am he who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me also bears witness about me. 19Then they said to him, Where is your father? Jesus answeredYou don't know me or my father: if you knew me, you should know my father.
20Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no one laid hands on him; for his hour had not yet come.
21Then Jesus said to them again:I go my way and you will seek me and die in your sins; where i go you can't come. 22Then the Jews said, Will he kill himself? for he says, Where I go, you cannot come.23And he said to them:you are from below; I am from above: you are of this world; I am not of this world. 24I therefore told you that you will die in your sins; because if you don't believe that I amAND, you will die in your sins. 25Then they said to him, Who are you? And Jesus said to them:Autothe sameI told you this from the beginning. 26I have a lot to say and judge about you; but he who sent me is true; and I will tell the world what I heard from him. 27They didn't understand that he was talking to them about their father.28Then Jesus said to them:When you exalt the Son of Man, you will know that I amAND, EOI don't do anything alone; but as my father taught me, I say these things. 29And he who sent me is with me: the Father has not left me alone; because I always do what pleases him. 30When he spoke these words, many believed him.
31Then Jesus said to the Jews who believed in him:do you keep my word?Thenyou are really my disciples; 32and you will recognize the truth, and the truth will set you free. 33They answered him, We are Abraham's offspring and were never slaves to man. How do you say: You must become free?34Jesus answered themTruly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant does not stay at home forever:Butthe son stays forever. 36Then, when the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37I know you are the seed of Abraham; but you seek to kill me, because my word has no place with you. 38I say what I saw my father do, and you do what you saw your father do. 39They answered and said to him, Abraham is our father. Jesus speaks to them:If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham. 40But now you seek to kill me, a man who told you the truth I heard from God: Abraham didn't do that. 41You do your father's deeds. And they said to him, We were not born of fornication; we have a fatherautoBom.
42Jesus said to them:If God were your Father, you would love me; because I left God and came; nor did I come of my own accord, but he sent me. 43Why don't you understand my speech?autobecause ye cannot hear my word. 44you are fromyourDevil's father, and your father's wishes you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning and did not remain in the truth because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks his own; for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45And why do I countOfthe truth, you do not believe me. 46Which of you convinces me to sin? And if I'm telling the truth, why don't you believe me? 47He that is of God heareth the words of God: therefore thou hearesttheynot because you are not of God.
48Then the Jews answered and said to him, Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan, and that you have a demon?49Jesus answeredI don't have a demon; but I honor my father, and you dishonor me. 50And I do not seek my own glory; there are those who seek and judge. 51Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will not see death. 52Then the Jews said to him: Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and ye say, If any man keep my word, he shall not taste death.53Are you greater than our late father Abraham? and the prophets are dead: who do you make of yourself?54Jesus answeredWhen I honor myself, my honor is nothing: it is my Father who honors me; who do you claim to be your God: 55yet you do not know him; but I know him, and if I say I don't know him, I'll be a liar like you; but I know him and I keep his words. 56Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he sawEs, and rejoiced. 57Then the Jews said to him, You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?58Jesus said to them:Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am. 59So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple, passing by them and so on.
